What Causes Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are more common as you grow older and are more likely to affect women and individuals assigned female at birth (AFAB). Other common risk factors include:
- Your family has a history of varicose veins
- An occupation requires that you stand for extended periods of time
- Sedentary lifestyle, including sitting for long periods while at work
- Excess weight puts additional pressure on the legs and circulatory system
- Smoking and poor nutrition
- Natural ageing, which weakens veins and causes a loss of skin elasticity
- Hormonal changes such as menopause
- Pregnancy increases blood volume, reduces blood flow from the legs, and add physical strain to the body
Any superficial veins throughout the body can become varicose veins, however, the condition most commonly affects the legs. This is because there is increased pressure on veins in the lower half of your body and muscles need to work harder to pump blood back up to your heart.
How Are Varicose Veins Assessed Before Treatment?
A visible varicose vein can be connected to another abnormal vein beneath the skin. Treatment planning based on appearance alone may miss the underlying problem.
During assessment, the clinician will review your:
- Symptoms and how long you have had them
- Medical history and relevant medications
- Previous vein procedures
- Work and activity requirements
- Pregnancy status, where relevant
- Treatment goals and expectations
Duplex ultrasound is often recommended to identify venous reflux, assess blood flow, and map abnormal veins before any treatment is planned.
What to Expect at Your First Appointment
First appointments at Vein Care typically run for 30 to 60 minutes. Here is what usually happens:
Step 1 – Clinical history The clinician will ask about your symptoms, how long you have had them, your medical history, any previous vein treatment, and your current medications.
Step 2 – Examination Visible veins are examined with you standing, which is the position that makes varicose veins most apparent.
Step 3 – Duplex ultrasound If clinically indicated and available, duplex ultrasound may be performed during the same appointment. The scan maps the vein anatomy and identifies whether reflux is present and where it originates.
Step 4 – Discussion The clinician explains the findings, outlines suitable treatment options and what each involves, and discusses risks, costs, Medicare eligibility and aftercare.
You are not required to proceed with any treatment at the first appointment. Patients may receive a summary of findings and a proposed treatment plan to consider after assessment.
